
Ann Alpers
President
Ann Alpers joined the S.H. Cowell board in 2004 and was elected president of the Foundation in 2005. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Alpers held public office as Deputy City Attorney for Health and Human Services for the City and County of San Francisco.
Ms. Alpers graduated from Stanford Law School. Following law school, she clerked for Judge William A. Norris of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and then for Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court. She joined the faculty of the Program in Medical Ethics in 1992. At University of California, San Francisco she co-directed the required medical ethics course and sat on the ethics committee. She has taught health law and bioethics as a visiting professor at Stanford Law School, St. Louis University School of Law, and the University of California, Berkeley.
Ms. Alpers was a Mayday Faculty Scholar through the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics and the Mayday Foundation in New York, New York. She has published numerous articles on physician-assisted suicide, legal and ethical issues in caring for adolescents and children, and legal and ethical issues involving end-of-life care.
She currently serves on the Organizational Effectiveness and Professional Development Committee for the Northern California Grantmakers.

Jamie Allison Hope
Program Officer, Youth Development
Jamie Allison Hope joined the S.H. Cowell Foundation in 2006 to oversee our Youth Development interests. Before joining Cowell, Ms. Allison Hope served as a consultant and contract researcher for universities, companies and foundations. She also worked as an interim program officer for the Stuart Foundation. Ms. Allison Hope earned a B.S. in political science and a B.A. in economics, Spanish and humanities from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. She holds a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley’s Graduate School of Public Policy.

Darryl Campbell
Accounting Specialist
Darryl Campbell has been with the S.H. Cowell Foundation since 2001. As the Foundation’s accounting specialist, he manages operating funds, general accounting, and vendor relationships. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Campbell worked as an accountant for PG&E Energy Services in San Francisco. He has over 18 years of corporate and nonprofit experience and holds a degree in accounting from Heald Business College in San Francisco.

Ken Doane
Senior Program Officer, Education
Ken Doane joined the S. H. Cowell Foundation in 2001 and oversees the grants program in Education. From 2003 to 2005, he also managed grants in Youth Development. As senior program officer he leads the Foundation’s processes for evaluation of the place-based, complementary grants strategy.
Before joining the Cowell Foundation, Mr. Doane was a middle and high school teacher and, as a research associate of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin, he contributed to national studies on school reform and restructuring. Subsequently, in San Francisco, he directed program development at Partners in School Innovation and served as a consultant to school districts, resource organizations and foundations with interests in teacher development, school improvement and educational equity. Mr. Doane holds a bachelor’s degree in English and History and a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and he earned a secondary teaching certificate through the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Doane serves as a director of the San Francisco Education Fund and as a trustee of Developmental Studies Center, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to children's academic, ethical and social development. By special arrangement with the Foundation, he also serves as an executive consultant to New Teacher Center, a national nonprofit organization committed to improving student learning by accelerating the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders.

Cynthia Farley
Administrative Assistant
Cynthia Farley joined the S.H. Cowell Foundation in 2004. As administrative assistant, she supports the director of administration, the president and general counsel. She is responsible for the front desk and also serves as general office manager. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Farley worked as executive assistant and office manager for the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. She holds a B.A. in liberal arts from Sonoma State University, and is certified to teach elementary education.

Anna Hernandez
Grants Assistant
Anna Hernandez joined the S. H. Cowell Staff in 2009. As a Grants Assistant, she serves as one of the first points of contact for grantees, and assists in all aspects of grant processing, with a particular focus on Youth Development and Affordable Housing. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Hernandez worked as an Initial Eligibility Assistant for the Contra Costa Housing Authority's Section 8 Office. Ms. Hernandez holds a B. A. in sociology from Saint Mary's College of California, and is fluent in Spanish.

Samuel Israel
Database Manager
Samuel Israel joined S. H. Cowell in 2008. As the Database Manager, he maintains the integrity of the Cowell grants database. In addition, Samuel is responsible for udating the content of the Cowell website. Before coming to the Foundation Samuel worked as a Technical Support Analyst in the corporate world. With over 20 years experience in IT, he holds degrees in electronics and computer networking from Heald College in San Francisco.

Irene T. Lodvick
Vice President Administration
Irene Lodvick has been a member of the S.H. Cowell Foundation staff since 1990. As Vice President Administration, she manages the day-to-day operation of the Foundation from personnel to facilities. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Lodvick was a regional administrator in real estate finance for the capital markets division of Coldwell Banker. She is also a founding member of E.R.P.A, a neighborhood-based organization. She holds a B.A. from San Jose State University.

Lise Maisano
Vice President Grant Programs
Lise Maisano has been with the S.H. Cowell Foundation since 1990, and has served as the Vice President Grant Programs since January 2006. In that capacity, Ms. Maisano manages all grantmaking functions of the Foundation and currently oversees our Family Resource Center and Affordable Housing interests.
During her early years as a program officer with the Foundation, Ms. Maisano was responsible for grantmaking in youth development, child care, disability assistance, domestic violence, child abuse and alcohol prevention.
Prior to Cowell, Ms. Maisano was the development director for the Giarretto Institute and a consultant with the Peninsula Community Foundation.
Raised in San Francisco, Ms. Maisano attended City public schools, received a B.A. in Social Relations from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She currently serves on the board and executive committee of Northern California Grantmakers.

Donald D. Roberts
Secretary and General Counsel
Donald D. Roberts has served on the S.H. Cowell Foundation board and provided general counsel to the Foundation since 2004. He is a retired partner of the international law firm Thelen, Reid, Brown, Raysman & Steiner, LLP. His primary area of legal and practice includes probate and estate planning, real estate and related business and tax matters.
He has been admitted to the State Bar of California, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court, the Northern District of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit. He is a member of the California Bar Association.
He holds a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and received his law degree from University of California’s Boalt Hall School of Law.

Maggie Son
Grants Assistant
Maggie Son joined the S.H. Cowell Foundation in 2006. In her role as grants assistant, she serves as one of the first points of contact for grantees, and assists in all aspects of grant processing, with a particular focus on Family Resource Centers and K-12 Public Education. Prior to joining the Foundation, Ms. Son worked as an intern for the World Affairs Council of Northern California and the International Peace Forum/World Monitors. Ms. Son holds a B.A. in Political Science from Barnard College of Columbia University, and is fluent in Korean.
